I ate what??? {Clean Eating}

"I ate WHAT???!!!" That was the reaction of my 9 year old son, Kaiden when I informed him about an ingredient in a certain packaged snack he ate. This particular snack (and it is most certainly not the only one!) is marketed to young kids as "Mixed Berry." But there is actually only one berry included in the ingredients...Dried Cranberries (cranberries, sugar, sunflower oil). The only other "berry" is listed as, "Natural Raspberry Flavour." Now, right away wouldn't you think this flavour, since it is natural, would have some actual raspberries in it? I did think that...and I was so, so, so very wrong! Oh yes, it is natural! But is it raspberry? Not by a long shot! If you are a vegetarian/vegan, you would be extremely upset by this information...another name for it is "Castorium" and if you google search it, you will rethink the foods your kids put in their mouths. I won't even go into the other ingredients listed...this ingredient alone is enough for one rant. :)

I've included this video below of Jamie Oliver speaking on the subject for some comic relief, but honestly, this revelation (research it...we are so deceived by the food industry as to what is "safe" and/or acceptable in our food) should make you steer clear of unknown ingredients. Castorium is just one of the many ingredients that can be listed on packaged foods as "natural flavor." We see this everywhere! I don't know about you, but clean eating is sounding better and better all the time. Give me a bowl of real raspberries any day!

It's pretty near impossible to avoid an additive like this and I will agree that a little bit of "beaver behind" is not going to hurt us (it's considered a delicacy in some countries). Some of the other ingredients on the other hand, we should not be ingesting (but I'll leave that alone for now). I am more bothered by the fact that the FDA gets away with grouping additives into the broad term: "natural flavours." The gross-out-factor alone is enough to make my boys steer clear...for now anyway...until they forget! :) This information did induce lots of giggles from them, but also a lot of creeped-out facial expressions! I love what Maggie says in her blog, "Life in a Skillet" <-----click here. She says, "Who figured out a beaver's behind tastes like raspberry?" I definitely found myself wondering the same thing.

Make these Chewy Granola bars for your family instead and be confident that they are getting good, clean treats with no hidden and strange ingredients!

My goal with "NotDeprived" has been and continues to be about helping us all be more aware of what we are putting in our bodies, finding clean & healthy alternatives and making a plan to feed ourselves and our families well. I have received some great testimonials from friends who have enjoyed the recipes, those who have seen their kids (and husbands) eat better and have even had their kids help out in the kitchen because they like watching the videos. Don't underestimate your children! I am continually amazed at the good things my boys will eat because they have become used to having the good stuff! If they don't feel deprived, you'll be amazed at how quickly they jump on the healthy bandwagon! Get them involved and they will understand why they, too should care about what they eat.
